Back in early October (OK, October 6) I wrote about my goals for Family History Month. So, how did I do?

Start thinking about how to get family history info out to the family (and knock down some Christmas gifts at the same time)

RESULT: Will end up just doing calendars. I have a plan in my mind for their layout, but didn’t get farther then that. Getting to be too late to do books or booklets.

Identify the genealogical services I’d like to provide

RESULT: Done! Yea!  Granted, I’m sure there is plenty of drill-down I can still do, but feeling good about the overview. AND! as a bonus, I managed to get them posted on a new “Services” page.

Get word out that I’m available for genealogical research and find a client or two

RESULT: Word is out and door is open! Well, can’t really call it a marketing blitz, but trying a few things to start letting people know I’m here. It will be interesting to see what, if any business, these actually bring in:

  • put an ad in school directory; did get excellent placement just inside the back cover but don’t expect hits from this one
  • put an ad in an online holiday guide (~870KB) which went live Nov 8; tag line is “give someone their past this year”
  • made a donation to elementary school auction of gift certificate for research time and copy of Who Do You Think You Are (with lots of extra business cards included in package); it sold for more then the opening price so I was happy about that
  • made the same donation to district PTSA auction which is running now (closes Dec 2), haven’t checked on the status of that one yet

Indeed, no actual clients served, but I’m still calling this one a thumbs up.

Set-up an editorial schedule for my blogging

RESULT: Bummer. Totally missed on this one. No schedule, few updates.

So, that’s how I did. What did you do to either celebrate Family History Month or just get started researching your family?

Now, off to work on solidifying those November goals…
