I just got back around to revisiting my genealogy goals for this month, which coincidentally is Family History Month. I was presently surprised to see myself making some progress. I’ll save the wrap-up for the end of the month (ooooooo-suspense!), but have YOU gotten on the band-wagon yet?
Maybe you just heard about this “Family History Month” or are new to genealogy and wondering where to start. If that’s you, I’ve listed some resources to jump-start your genealogical education. I’m focusing on FREE resources because, well, free is good. I’m also focusing on Online options (as the title suggests) because everyone I know is really dang busy and have to sneak in things like educational opportunities where they can. Like after the kids have gone to bed. Any maybe the bedtime routine just didn’t work tonight.
Also, this is a personal list of educational opportunities I want to take, I’ve only actually take the the first one from Family Tree University so far. (Yes, consider that a disclaimer if they turn out to be snoozers.)
Family Tree University had a free webinar on Oct 16th: 10 Steps to Discover Your Roots. I did attend this live and it was a great overview of where and how to start. It’s available on demand, you just have to supply your email for registration. (OK, small cost.)
BYU Independent Study offers some free online classes in the categories of Introductory, Record Type, and Regional and Ethnic. (you might have to scroll down a bit to find the classes.)
FamilySearch.org has a whole page listing a variety of classes and another page of presentations from a wide variety of sources: APG[1], BCG[2], ICAPGen[3], and the Midwest Genealogical Center[4].
Genealogy.com has a whole page listing free classes.
Rootsweb.com has a series of lessons (text based).
Don’t see anything that strikes your fancy here? Check out Cyndi’s List (education category) where you will find TONS of resources. And just bookmark Cyndi’s List while you are there. You’ll find it indispensible, no matter what level researcher you become.
